What are companies looking for in Testers?



I always wanted to have a place where i could just add what is the skillset companies are looking for today?
This will help us perform the Capabilities Assessment explained in the earlier post Five-gems-for-tester-to-groom-in

(This is from various job offerings, and i'll try and update similar posts regularly in a more categorical manner)


RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO

  • Hands on experience in preparation of Test scenarios, Test cases & Test scripts
  • Excellent oral and written communication skill
  • Knowledge of Software Development Lifecycle and Software Testing Lifecycle
  • Knowledge of databases (MS SQL Server and oracle)
  • Have the ability to write SQL statements
  • Knowledge of Selenium or similar open source testing tools an added plus
  • Helps define scope and project timelines for a testing cycle.
  • Assists in reviewing/managing bug reports to ensure reproducibility and quality.
  • Experience creating Automation Test Scripts using tools like QTP
  • Proficient in using HP QTP for Test automation (a must) with minimum 2+ years hands on
  • Experience working with an Onshore/Offshore Outsourcing Model is a big plus.
  • Good analytical skills
  • Log the bugs into the bug tracking system
  • Develop test plans based on test strategy 
  • Develop scripts, utilities, simulators, data sets and other programmatic test tools as required to execute Test Plans 
  • Competent in analyzing the requirements and identifying the test cases
  • Strong thought leadership/innovation and passion for metrics driven continuous improvement 
  • WebServices testing experience
  • Testing process and standards test tools, including version control 
  • Framework experience 
  • Good individual contributor as well as a team player with ability to build strong partner confidence
  • Experience on a large financial application a plus.\
  • Testing tools: Quality Center, Performance Center, WinRunner/Vugen, QTP, Load Generators
  • Knowledge of web page composition (static vs. dynamic elements, browser behavior, etc.)
  • An understanding of networking and web technologies such as HTML, JavaScript, jsp, asp, Flash, etc.  
  • (ATDD) with ability to learn and champion Automated Acceptance Test Driven Development
  • Execute load and performance tests against Web applications, web services and SQL Server.
  • understanding of web protocols including HTTP, HTTPS, TCP/IP, and DNS
  • Unix skills and ability to perform secure file transfer function

    You can use this list like a checklist and see what interests you and start learning. One year exp is perfect time for you to evaluate what you have learnt, set small milestones of what you want to add to your skill-set in the coming years. Hope this helps!
